Sorry, Chess Gateway has ceased service ...

Dear Chess Gateway visitor,

After some weeks of consideration, I have come to the reluctant and heavy decision that Chess Gateway must cease service. Though this may come as a surprise, there are a few underlying reasons for this decision. Not only would I like to explain these reasons, I think that it is only right that I do so. The many thousands of chess fans that have frequented the website deserve far more than a blank page and brief goodbye.

When I started Chess Gateway, in April 2006, it was as a serious chess news outlet, that would bring a valuable service to chess fans around the world. I think, in the main, I have fulfilled that vision, with the website being regularly visited by thousands, and with a following in around 50 countries.

However, my wish of being able to do this professionally, unfortunately has not been realised, and my living comes from other area's. Though this factor does not decrease my motivation, (which is as strong now as it ever was), sadly, I have found it hard to balance, and working around 40 hours per week does not leave much time or energy in order to respectably maintain the site. Regular visitors will be aware of some periods of dormancy, a regrettable and frustrating factor that I find unacceptable with regard to the standard of website that Chess Gateway has been. Sometimes, one has to swallow a bitter pill, this decision, unfortunately is mine.

However, it is not all on a sad note, Chess Gateway has done things that I never imagined. When I started the website I would never have dreamed of being regularly read by so many chess fans, all giving such positive feedback. The book review and classic game features have both been hugely followed. Corus 2006 I covered for the website from the audience, and then in 2007 and 2008 I was allowed my own press pass, mingling with highly respected journalists and players alike. I look back on it all with very fond memories, and absolutely no regrets. As someone once said to me, 'it is better to be a has been, than a never was'.

I wish to end by thanking some people, without whose help and support the website would not have become what it is:

-- Firstly, my wonderful girlfriend, for all her help and support throughout.

-- To Fabian van der Tol, for the design of the fantastic logo, now known throughout the world.

-- Grandmaster Susan Polgar and her Husband Paul Truong, for their invaluable sponsorship and help in bringing the website to the attention of the chess world.

-- To Gambit Books, for their endless supply of high quality releases to review.

-- To the many chess players and journalists whom I have had the pleasure of meeting while operating the website.

-- To the many websites carrying Chess Gateway links, who have helped increase circulation on a monthly basis.

-- And last but by no means least, to you, dear visitor, for casting the website a glance in the first place, and in many cases, adding it to your favourites to return again and again.

And so, as I write my final words for Chess Gateway, I do so with immense pride and gratitude at its achievements. Hence, I will retain the domain indefinately so that it is not mis-used. I can also still be contacted through the website, via the contact form or john[at]chessgateway.com.

The links page will also remain active.

Though the site ceases service, I remain a passionate supporter of chess, and hope to continue my writing for other outlets. Thus, should you be seeking to hire a chess journalist, (especially for Corus Wijk aan Zee, as I live only a short drive from the venue), examples of my writing can be found below.

Best Wishes,
